Frequently Asked Questions
What types of personal injury cases does your firm handle in Maine?
We represent clients injured in car, truck, motorcycle and pedestrian accidents, dog bites, slip/trip & fall (premises liability), medical-malpractice, wrongful-death claims, and other serious injury matters. If you’ve been hurt and someone else’s negligence played a role, we’ll assess whether your case falls under Maine’s personal injury laws and explain your options clearly.

When should I hire a personal injury lawyer?
Hire a lawyer as soon as reasonably possible after your injury, ideally before you give a recorded statement to an insurance company, and definitely before you sign a release. Evidence (photos, witness statements, video) can be lost over time, medical records get harder to assemble, and deadline pitfalls can arise. Early legal involvement helps ensure your rights are protected and the full value of your claim is preserved.

What does it cost to work with your firm?
At Okun Law, we handle personal injury cases on a contingency-fee basis, which means you pay nothing upfront - we only get paid if we recover compensation for you. We’ll explain our fee structure clearly in your representation agreement, including how costs and expenses are handled so you understand exactly what to expect.

What is the statute of limitations for personal injury claims in Maine?
In most personal injury matters in Maine, you must bring your claim (file a lawsuit) within 6 years of the date of the injury; however, there are important exceptions (for example, claims against the State, minors, or latent injuries). Because deadlines vary by case, we recommend contacting us promptly so we can review the timeline that applies to your situation.

What happens after I hire your firm for my injury case?
Once you hire our firm:
-
We’ll schedule a detailed consultation and gather key documents (medical records, accident reports, witnesses, photos).
-
We’ll communicate with the insurance company or at-fault party and handle negotiations.
-
We will keep you updated at each step. We prioritize communication and make sure you know what’s going on.
-
If a fair settlement isn’t offered, we will prepare to file a lawsuit and, if necessary, take the case to trial to pursue maximum compensation on your behalf.

What clients say about Okun Law PLLC
I can't thank you enough for your staunch efforts over these past months as you worked to bring successful resolutions to two auto accident cases where my vehicle was hit from behind, each by distracted drivers, and occurring eight days apart. In the second crash, the driver was not only distracted, totaling my vehicle, but also uninsured. The details of these suits with two insurance companies, mine and the first driver's, along with medial bills was incredible, but you kept on until a settlement was reached. I had never called an attorney before, so I would highly recommend your law firm to anyone who may be hesitant to try to handle a similar situation their own.
Thank you again.
